Paul Cook has revealed the reason Leon Balogun was forced to quit the action during the second half of Wigan Athletic's 1-0 victory at West Brom.

The German-born Nigerian international - on loan from Brighton until the end of the season - was in imperious form until being replaced by Kal Naismith at the three-quarter mark.

Fans had started to speculate - or rather panic - as to a possible injury picked up by Balogun, with fellow centre-backs Chey Dunkley and Danny Fox having both been ruled out for the season.

But Cook quickly dispelled any worry on that score.

"Leon was sick at half-time," the Latics boss revealed.

"He wanted to stay on the pitch, but obviously he wasn't too well.

"We had Anthony Pilkington ready to come on for Gary Roberts, but Leon had to come off instead.

"That meant we had to readjust and put Kal Naismith on at the back, but he slotted in well."
