Former Wigan Athletic chief Malky Mackay lands new senior role in Scotland

The 52-year-old, who spent an ill-fated six months in charge of Latics during the 2014-15 campaign, which saw him sacked just before relegation was confirmed, officially starts in the role on June 1.

He had been out of work since being sacked as Ross County manager last November.

And the appointment comes just hours after Hibs parted company with manager Nick Montgomery.

The departure of Montgomery means the Gordon family – who own Hibs – have sacked four managers in less than two and a half years – one of them being current Latics boss Shaun Maloney, in April 2022.

“We’d like to welcome Malky and believe he will be a huge asset to our club and the football department," read a statement on behalf of the Gordon family. "As the board conducted the football review, it became clear to everyone that not only did we need someone with experience of the Scottish game, but also a person who could help drive us forward both strategically and operationally.

“Early in the recruitment process, Malky discussed his strategic vision for Hibs and the necessary framework to deliver success. Everyone at the club looks forward to working with him.”

Mackay has a wealth of experience in Scottish football as a player, manager and performance director.

Hibs say, as sporting director, Mackay 'will lead and oversee the entire football operation, encompassing all departments from recruitment through to the Academy. He will also lead on the appointment of the next head coach'.
